Autumn Winter Evening Wardrobe Essentials
The coats, knits, skirts and layers that carry you through cold nights out, with outfit ideas that stay warm without losing their romance.
Autumn winter wardrobe essentials for the evening come down to a handful of pieces: a long wool coat, a fine knit, opaque tights, a pair of boots you can walk in, a tailored jacket and one dress or skirt that works with all of them. Add a scarf and a deep colour such as burgundy, and you can dress up for cold nights without shivering or giving up on looking festive.
The trick is to layer lightly and warmly, so you are comfortable outside and not overheated once you arrive.
Why evenings need different autumn winter wardrobe essentials
Daytime winter dressing is about staying warm. Evening dressing in winter has a harder job: it must keep you warm on the walk, look good under candlelight, and still be comfortable in a hot restaurant or a crowded bar. That means natural fibres, layers that come off easily and a coat that does much of the work.
Wool is the backbone of most cold-weather wardrobes for good reason. The Woolmark Company's factsheet on breathability explains that the natural crimp of the fibre traps still air for insulation, and that wool absorbs moisture vapour and releases it, which helps it feel comfortable when you move from cold streets into warm rooms. Woolmark is an industry body, but the principle is well established.
The autumn winter wardrobe essentials list
Here are the pieces that carry you through from October to February.
- A long wool coat. Black, charcoal or camel, cut with enough room for a jacket underneath. Below the knee looks elegant over dresses and keeps your legs warm.
- A trench for autumn. Before the real cold arrives, a trench handles rain and wind. The V&A's history of the trench coat traces it from Thomas Burberry's gabardine, patented in 1879, to the coats worn by officers in the First World War, and explains why it was so readily carried into civilian life: it was warm, waterproof and hard-wearing.
- A fine-gauge knit. Merino or cashmere, in black or ivory. Thin enough to sit under a jacket or over a lace top.
- A tailored blazer. The layer that turns a knit and skirt into an evening outfit.
- A dress or skirt in a weightier fabric. Wool crepe, heavier lace or a plaid midi skirt.
- Opaque tights. Forty to sixty denier in black makes a skirt wearable in December.
- Boots you can walk in. Knee-high or ankle, with a block heel.
- A scarf. Large enough to wrap twice, and soft enough to wear indoors if you are cold.
Colour and texture for darker months
Winter is the season when dark colours look richest. Black, ivory and burgundy work especially well together: black as the base, ivory near the face for light, burgundy for warmth. Our guide to black and burgundy outfits explains how to balance them.
Texture matters more when the palette is dark. Combine smooth wool with lace, ribbed knit with satin, or tweed with chiffon, so the outfit has depth under low light.
Winter evening outfits that work
These winter evening outfits use the essentials above and suit most occasions.
Dinner
A fine black knit tucked into a pleated skirt, with opaque tights and ankle boots. Add a blazer and your coat on top. For more combinations, see our pleated mini skirt outfits, many of which work in winter with tights.
The theatre or a concert
A lace top layered under a cardigan or a fine jumper, with tailored trousers and loafers. Lace peeking out at the neckline and cuffs looks deliberate and keeps you warm. Our guide to layering lace under knitwear shows how to do it without bulk.
Parties and winter going out outfits
A dress in black lace or crepe, worn with sheer tights, a heeled boot and a long coat. Take a cardigan or a wrap for the cloakroom queue. When you arrive, everything comes off except the dress.
Autumn outfit ideas for milder evenings
Early autumn calls for lighter layers. A few autumn outfit ideas for September and October evenings:
- A plaid midi skirt with a fine knit and a trench coat.
- A waistcoat or sleeveless vest over a lace blouse, with straight trousers.
- A slip dress with a blazer and loafers, and a scarf for later.
As the temperature drops, swap the trench for a wool coat and add tights.
Building your winter wardrobe slowly
You do not need all of this at once. Start with a coat you love and a knit you will wear twice a week, then add one piece a season. A small, coordinated set of clothes is easier to dress from on a cold, dark evening; our guide to an evening capsule wardrobe shows how to plan it.
Several pieces in Notte & Noir's first collection suit these months, such as the Plaid Scarf Vest, the Knit & Lace Set, the Plaid Midi Skirt and the Lace-Cuff Blazer. You can see them in the first collection, or join the list for launch news.
