Pleated Mini Skirt Outfits for Autumn and Winter
How to wear a pleated mini in the colder months, with the tights, knitwear, boots and coats that make it work from October to March.
A pleated mini skirt outfit works brilliantly in autumn and winter if you balance the short hemline with warmth everywhere else: opaque tights, a substantial knit, knee-high or ankle boots and a long coat. The pleats add movement and the layers add polish, so the result looks grown-up and deliberate. Get the tights and the coat length right and you can wear a mini all season.
Where the mini came from
The miniskirt is one of the defining shapes of the 1960s. The Fashion History Timeline at FIT credits Mary Quant and André Courrèges with introducing the miniskirt and minidress around 1964, and notes that young women wore them with brightly coloured and patterned tights. Quant had opened her shop, Bazaar, on the King's Road in 1955.
The V&A holds a Quant evening mini-dress from around 1962 in moss-green rayon crêpe, finished with two tiers of pleated frills; the museum notes it was shortened later in the decade as hemlines climbed (V&A: Mary Quant evening mini-dress). When the museum staged its Mary Quant retrospective in 2019, covering her work from 1955 to 1975, tights featured among her designs alongside the minis (FashionUnited on the V&A Mary Quant exhibition). The mini and the tight have been partners from the start, which is good news for anyone wanting to wear one in December.
Building a pleated mini skirt outfit for cold weather
Think of the outfit in four layers: legs, top, shoes and coat. If each one is warm and in proportion, the mini looks deliberate.
Legs: tights first
Tights are the foundation of a mini skirt in winter. Choose them by occasion:
- 60–100 denier opaque black tights for everyday warmth and a seamless line with a black skirt.
- Fleece-lined tights for very cold days; the best ones look nearly identical to standard opaques.
- Sheer 15–20 denier tights for evening, worn with heels.
- Ribbed or cable-knit tights for weekends, especially with chunky boots.
Colour-matching tights to your shoes or skirt lengthens the leg. Contrasting tights look more playful and very sixties.
Top: knit for balance
A short skirt needs a little volume or weight on top. A chunky crewneck tucked in at the front, a fine merino polo neck, or a cropped cardigan buttoned all the way up all work. For a softer, romantic version, our guide to layering lace under knitwear shows how to let a lace collar or cuff peek out.
Shoes: boots do the heavy lifting
Knee-high boots are the most flattering partner, because they cover most of the leg and leave just a flash of tight. Heeled or flat both work. Chunky loafers with socks over tights are a fun, more casual alternative, and sleek ankle boots suit an evening look.
Coat: length matters
A long coat that falls well below the skirt hem looks elegant and keeps you warm. A cropped jacket or short wool blazer that ends at the waist gives a sharper, more youthful line. Avoid coats that end exactly where the skirt does, which can make it look as if you forgot the skirt. Get the coat right and any pleated mini skirt outfit looks finished.
Black mini skirt outfit ideas
The black mini is the easiest place to start, because it pairs with almost anything. Five combinations to try:
- All black. Black pleated mini, black opaque tights, black polo neck, black knee boots and a camel coat.
- Black and ivory. Black mini, ivory cable knit, black loafers and white socks over tights.
- Black and burgundy. Black mini, burgundy jumper and burgundy tights for a rich autumn tone.
- Evening. Black mini, sheer tights, a silk or lace blouse and pointed heels.
- Tailored. Black mini with a matching oversized blazer, a shirt and loafers for an off-duty suit.
Each black mini skirt outfit above works with the same pair of boots, so one good pair takes you a long way.
Pleated skirt outfit ideas beyond black
Pleated skirts come in other colours and patterns, and many of the same rules apply. A grey or camel pleated skirt outfit looks preppy with a navy jumper and loafers. Tartan and check minis lean towards the 1990s; for ideas on wearing a check, see our guide to plaid skirt outfits.
Pay attention to the pleat type, too. Knife pleats lie flat and look neat under fitted knitwear. Box pleats stand away from the body and look best with something cropped or tucked in. Fine accordion pleats move beautifully in thinner fabrics but need more care.
Mini skirt in winter: going out
A mini skirt in winter can look especially good for evenings out. Sheer tights, a heeled boot or court, and a cropped jacket feel modern, while a velvet or lace top adds a festive touch. For a first date or a dinner, a pleated mini skirt outfit with a soft jumper and boots is relaxed but clearly considered; our first date outfit guide has more ideas.
Our Lace-Waist Pleated Mini, from the first Notte & Noir collection, was designed with exactly these layers in mind. You can see it in the first collection.
