Plaid Skirt Outfits: From Office to Evening
How to wear a plaid or tartan skirt from a weekday morning to a dinner reservation, with pairings for minis and midis alike.
The easiest plaid skirt outfit pulls one colour out of the check and repeats it on top: a black jumper with a black-and-red tartan, or a cream shirt with a grey check. Keep the rest plain and well cut, and the pattern looks deliberate. From there, you can take the same skirt from the office to dinner simply by changing your shoes, top and jewellery.
Plaid and tartan: a quick history
The words are often used interchangeably, though they have different roots. In Scotland, a plaid was originally a length of cloth worn wrapped and draped over the shoulder, while tartan describes the woven pattern of crossing coloured stripes. In everyday fashion language, especially in North America, plaid now means almost any check.
Tartan has a richer story than the shortbread tin suggests. V&A Dundee's 2023 Tartan exhibition gathered more than 300 objects, from the oldest known surviving piece of true tartan found in Scotland (dated to roughly 1500–1600 and recovered from a peat bog in Glen Affric) to a 1922 Chanel silk cape in Gordon tartan and work by Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen (V&A Dundee on the Tartan exhibition). The museum also notes that more than 11,000 tartans are now recorded.
McQueen made tartan personal. He first used his family's tartan in his autumn/winter 1995 collection and returned to it in The Widows of Culloden for autumn/winter 2006, with the red, yellow and black cloth woven in Lochcarron, Scotland (The Widows of Culloden). It is a reminder that a check can be romantic and serious as well as preppy.
How to style a plaid skirt for the office
For a workday plaid skirt outfit, treat the check as your one statement and keep everything else calm.
- Top. A fine merino crewneck, a polo neck or a crisp shirt in a solid colour taken from the check.
- Layer. A plain black or navy blazer, or a tailored waistcoat. Our guide to waistcoat outfits for women shows how a vest sharpens a skirt.
- Tights and shoes. Opaque black tights with loafers, block-heel courts or sleek ankle boots.
- Bag. A structured leather tote in black, brown or burgundy.
A midi length is the most office-friendly, but a knee-length A-line works too. Keep jewellery small: a watch, studs, a fine chain.
The plaid midi skirt: the most versatile shape
A plaid midi skirt is the shape that does the most work across a week. Pleated or A-line, it skims the hips and moves well, and it suits almost every height when paired with the right shoe.
For daytime
Pair it with a chunky cream jumper, tucked in at the front, and knee-high boots so no leg shows between hem and shaft. A long camel or black coat finishes it.
For the weekend
Try a fitted black T-shirt or ribbed long-sleeve top with trainers or loafers. A denim jacket or a cropped leather jacket keeps it relaxed.
For evening
A black lace or silk blouse, sheer black tights and a slim heeled boot or pointed court shift the mood entirely. Add a deep red lip and statement earrings.
Tartan skirt outfit ideas for evening
A tartan skirt outfit can look surprisingly glamorous after dark. Red-and-black or dark green tartans work especially well at night, because they echo the warm, low light of restaurants and theatres. Five ideas:
- Lace and tartan. A black lace top with a red tartan midi is a classic romantic pairing.
- Velvet. A black velvet blouse or jacket adds richness to any check.
- Black and burgundy. Pick out the darkest tones of the tartan with a burgundy jumper and black accessories; our guide to black and burgundy outfits has more ideas in this palette.
- The corset. A black corset top over a fine knit or shirt, with a tartan skirt, nods to Westwood without looking like a costume.
- The tuxedo. A tartan skirt with a black satin-lapelled jacket is a lovely option for festive parties.
Short and pleated: the plaid mini
A plaid mini is more playful and owes a lot to the 1990s. To keep it grown-up, wear it with opaque tights, a fitted knit and boots, and avoid accessories that drift into school-uniform territory, such as knee socks and ties. For full outfit ideas, our guide to pleated mini skirt outfits covers tights, coats and shoes for winter.
Plaid skirt outfit rules for colour and pattern
Every plaid skirt outfit starts with the colours already in the check. A few rules that rarely fail:
- Repeat one colour. Choose a top in one of the skirt's colours, ideally the darkest one.
- Add a neutral. Black, ivory, camel or grey are always safe with a check.
- Keep other patterns small. If you want to mix prints, pair the check with a tiny polka dot or a fine stripe in the same palette.
- Mind the scale. Large checks look best on midi and maxi lengths; small checks suit minis.
Our Plaid Midi Skirt and Plaid Scarf Vest are both part of the first collection, designed to be worn together or apart.
