Calico first.

Before any lace or crepe is cut, the drawing is made up in plain calico and pinned on the stand. It looks like nothing. It tells us everything.

The neckline moves a centimetre, the waist comes in, a dart goes. Most of the design work happens here, with pins, not on paper.

Only when the calico sits right on three different stands does the real cloth come out.
