Halter Neck Dresses: Who They Suit and How to Style Them
Which body shapes a halter neckline flatters, what to wear underneath, and how to style a halter dress from summer days to black tie.
A halter neck dress suits far more people than its reputation suggests: the straps that fasten behind the neck draw the eye to the shoulders and collarbones, so it flatters anyone who likes their arms and upper back. Style it with bare shoulders, minimal necklaces and hair worn up or swept to one side. Choose the right support underneath and it becomes one of the easiest evening shapes to wear.
Where the halter dress comes from
Many designers have used the halter neckline, but two dresses fixed it in the popular imagination. The first is the ivory dress Marilyn Monroe wore in Billy Wilder's The Seven Year Itch (1955). Designed by William Travilla, it had a halter bodice with a plunging neckline and a softly pleated skirt in a rayon-type fabric, and the famous subway grate scene was first filmed on Lexington Avenue in New York in September 1954 (White dress of Marilyn Monroe).
The second is Halston's work in the 1970s. The Museum at FIT holds a 1972 floor-length Halston halter dress in doubled silk jersey, given by Lauren Bacall, whose long bodice panels wrap and tie at the waist so the wearer can choose how much skin to show; the museum credits Halston with defining the look of the decade (FIT Museum: Halston evening dress, 1972). Between them, these dresses show the halter's two moods: playful and summery, or long, fluid and glamorous.
Who a halter neck dress suits
Because the halter frames the shoulders, it is especially flattering if you have:
- Broad or athletic shoulders. The inward angle of the straps narrows the line visually and shows off toned arms.
- A smaller bust. A halter gives shape and lift at the neckline without needing much structure.
- A long neck or short torso. The vertical line of the straps lengthens the upper body.
- A pear shape. Drawing attention up to the shoulders balances fuller hips, especially with an A-line or bias skirt.
For a fuller bust, choose a halter with wide straps, a structured or lined bodice and built-in support. A deep V halter with thicker fabric is often more comfortable than a thin-strapped style.
What to wear underneath
The bra is the first question with any halter dress. The right answer depends on the back:
- Built-in support. Many halter dresses have internal cups or a boned bodice. This is the simplest option.
- Halter-neck or multiway bra. Many strapless bras come with straps that convert to a halter. Choose one with a wide band for support.
- Adhesive bras. Good for open backs and deep necklines, best for smaller to medium busts.
- Nipple covers. For very low backs and plunging fronts with little need for support.
If your halter dress also has an open back, our guide to open-back tops covers every underwear option in more detail.
How to style a halter neck for day and evening
Knowing how to style a halter neck mostly comes down to keeping the neckline clear.
Jewellery
Skip necklaces, which compete with the straps. Instead, choose earrings: drops, hoops or a single statement pair. Bracelets and rings work well too, especially with bare arms.
Hair
An updo, a sleek low bun or a high ponytail shows off the shoulders and the line of the straps. If you prefer hair down, sweep it to one side.
Shoes
For daytime halter dresses in cotton or linen, flat sandals, espadrilles or clean trainers keep things easy. For evening, strappy sandals, slingbacks or pointed courts lengthen the leg.
Fabric and colour
For daytime, a cotton, linen or light jersey halter dress in black, ivory or a soft print feels relaxed and keeps you cool. As the evening approaches, darker shades and fabrics with sheen, such as satin, crepe and lace, look more dressed up. A halter in a single solid colour is the most versatile, since it lets you change the mood entirely with shoes and jewellery.
Layers
A cropped jacket, a fine cardigan or a sharply tailored blazer worn over the shoulders works for cooler evenings and keeps the neckline visible.
The halter neck evening dress
A floor-length or midi halter neck evening dress is a graceful choice for formal events. In black lace, silk crepe or satin, it reads as classic and suits black tie optional invitations well; our guide to black tie optional dressing explains the dress code in detail.
For a long halter neck dress at a formal event:
- Choose fabric with movement. Bias-cut satin, jersey and crepe all fall beautifully from a halter neckline.
- Keep accessories small. Statement earrings and a small clutch are enough.
- Bring a wrap. A silk or cashmere wrap covers bare shoulders in a cool venue or during a ceremony.
- Mind the length. Floor-length should just graze the floor in your chosen heels.
Black lace is a particularly beautiful choice, because the halter shape stops the lace feeling heavy. Our guide to styling a black lace dress has more ideas for accessories and occasions.
